Rochester Halloween display returns with 150 inflatables

Oct. 23—ROCHESTER — The

annual Boyer Halloween inflatable display

returns Friday, Oct. 27, in northwest Rochester with more than 150 inflatables.

Mike and Christy Boyer and their family have been decorating for Halloween for more than 10 years, and encouraging people to bring donations for Channel One Regional Food Bank. The inspiration came from their three-month-old son, Isaac, who died from sudden infant death syndrome.

"His birthday was around Halloween, and we thought this was a memorable way to keep his memory alive," Christy Boyer said in a statement announcing this year's display. "While we have been fortunate to not need Channel One's services, I used to work as a social worker and saw how important food and nutrition was to others. We started it as something fun and, with my oldest son's suggestion, started collecting donations to make it even more meaningful. Nothing makes us happier than knowing we are creating memories for kids, especially, and their families."

The inflatable display includes blow-up creatures, a path through their yard and a walk-through tunnel. People can enjoy the display in the evenings this week, though the final display will be available on Friday.

The donations show the family's value of service, which began with food items and switched to monetary donations in 2020. The Boyers have raised $10,812 for Channel One's hunger relief programs, which help fight food insecurity in 14 counties.

"This is such a fun way to engage the community and raise awareness, and we are so appreciative of the public's and the Boyer's generosity," Virginia Witherspoon Merritt, Channel One Regional Food Bank executive director, said in a statement. "With the recent increase in household visits to the food shelf — 6,737 in September — this effort is more important than ever to ensure Channel One meets the need for food for our neighbors."

While attending Boyer Halloween is free, people can make a monetary donation onsite with cash or a check. People can also donate through Zelle or Venmo.

The Boyer Halloween display is open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily through Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 5348 51st St. NW, in Rochester. On Halloween, people can expect long lines down the street, and candy at the end of the path. The Boyers also recommend checking their Facebook page,

for a change in hours due to their wind-dependent display.

"We've raised the kids with that idea of service. It's important to us that people give back," Christy shared with the Post Bulletin in 2022. "And our kids have taught us that because they're older, three of our kids are adults now, they wouldn't do this unless they liked it. We're very fortunate to see them do that."
