Robin Williams’ Best Outtakes and Blooper Reels

Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams in ‘Hook’ (TriStar Pictures)

Robin Williams, who died one year ago today, was well-known for bringing tireless creative energy to his film sets. Even when the cameras stopped rolling, he often kept going — as is evidenced by these blooper reels, outtakes, and behind-the-scenes footage from Hook, Night at the Museum, and three other Robin Williams films.

Hamlet (1996) In between takes of Kenneth Branaugh’s four-hour Shakespearean epic, Williams (who played the courtier Osric) riffs on the Bard (“It’s a hit, man, a palpable hit!”), cracking up the crew.

Night At the Museum (2006) The only actor who could upstage Williams on this star-studded set? A pooping monkey. Williams, in his finest Teddy Roosevelt form, appears throughout this blooper reel, beginning at the 1:45 mark. Highlights include Williams showing off a special surprise from Crystal the capuchin.

Hook (1991) This postmodern Peter Pan story had a troubled production, but you’d never know it from this behind-the-scenes reel of Williams on set. Whether he’s joking about his flying apparatus (“If I didn’t have testicles, this would be a lot more fun”) or riffing on his jealousy of co-star Dustin Hoffman’s Oscars, Williams seems to be surrounded by constant laughter.

Man of the Year (2006) Here’s Williams cracking up his co-stars — including Christopher Walken, Lewis Black, and Laura Linney — by taking joke requests during a birthday-party scene from the political satire.

Awakenings (1990) Director Penny Marshall couldn’t use any of Williams’ improvisations for her based-on-a-true-story drama about a doctor (Williams) who revives a catatonic patient (Robert De Niro). But she and De Niro appreciated his bringing some levity to the set — as seen in this outtake of him slipping into the wrong character.
