Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Dolittle movie coming to theaters in 2019

Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Dolittle movie gets 2019 release date

Robert Downey Jr. is getting ready to talk with the animals. Universal Pictures has given his Doctor Dolittle movie a May 24, 2019 release date.

The as-yet-untitled film (previously reported to be called The Voyage of Dr. Dolittle) is described by Universal as “a sweeping adventure” and will be directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter Stephen Gaghan (Traffic), who wrote the most recent version of the screenplay from an earlier draft by Tom Shepherd. Jeff Kirschenbaum and Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent) are producing along with Susan Downey (Sherlock Holmes).

Downey’s Doctor Dolittle film marks the third big-screen adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s children’s books about a doctor who takes on animal patients and speaks to them in their own languages. The character previously appeared in the 1967 musical starring Rex Harrison and a 1998 reboot starring Eddie Murphy.

Other films expected to release on May 24, 2019 include Warner Bros.’ Minecraft: The Movie and Disney’s Star Wars: Episode IX.
