Robert Bales's Wife Doesn't Think He Was Involved in Afghan Massacre
Afghan officials say that one of Robert Bales's 16 victims was a pregnant woman, possibly explaining why the military has charged Bales with 17 murders.Meanwhile, Bales's wife Kari, in an interview with the Today show this morning, said she isn't convinced Bales was even involved.

"The Americans are right and one of the females was pregnant, which is why they are saying 17," Kandahar Province Police Chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Raziq said in a report by The New York Times' Rod Norland. Though American officials have yet to respond, Raziq's claim does bring some clarity to the puzzlement and possibly explains why the military charged Bales with 17 counts of murder when American military and Afghan officials initially only reported 16 Afghan civilians had been killed on the March 11 shooting spree. Norland explains:
Charging Sergeant Bales with the death of a fetus would explain the discrepancy and under a seldom-used section of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the death of an unborn baby could be considered a murder whether or not the killer was aware that his victim was pregnant and whether or not he had intended to kill the fetus.
Meanwhile, Bales's wife Kari has come out on the Today show Monday, telling Matt Lauer, "I just don't think he was involved." As you can see in video below, it appears that even Lauer has a hard time trying to pinpoint whether she actually believes that her husband had no involvement in the killing spree despite the existence of surveillance footage and emerging details of Bales's actions that night, or if she simply thinks that the man she married wasn't capable of this tragedy. The interview shifts between the two, but Kari Bales does make it chillingly clear that it's the former. "I don't have enough information," she says, adding that "nothing" would be able to change her mind of her husband's innocence. "This is not what it appears to be," she says.
