Robbery suspect injured in police-involved shooting in Elkridge, police say

A robbery suspect was injured in a police-involved shooting in Elkridge early Friday morning before being apprehended, Howard County police said. A second robbery suspect was also arrested, police said.

Police said the suspects robbed a CVS store in the 6400 block of Old Waterloo Road. Officers were called at 3:20 a.m. after Oxycontin, Percocet and cash were stolen from the CVS, police said.

Officers found a fleeing vehicle and tried to stop it, but the car kept going and struck a curb, police said. The two suspects, who were the only occupants in the car, jumped out, police said.

An officer saw one suspect brandish a weapon toward police, and the officer fired his own service weapon, police said.

The suspect, identified as Jarkell Champion, 20, of Washington, D.C., was struck in the leg, police said. Champion ran away but was caught about 30 minutes later, police said. He was taken to a hospital and has since been released, police said.

Police said some sharp-eyed residents who knew to call 911 helped officers track the suspect down.

"We really got calls from neighbors. The community was really instrumental in this case. Multiple people heard something suspicious, saw him in their neighborhood, called 911 and we were able to make that apprehension in about a half an hour," Howard County police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said.

"At 4 o'clock, we woke up to the noise of a helicopter overhead and we heard some shouting outside. So we opened the shades and saw a couple of police officers with guns drawn pointing at somebody, saying, 'Hands up. Higher.' The floodlights from the helicopter (were) right on our garage, and it was pretty scary for a moment," said Mike Ortman, a resident.

The other suspect, Titus Kittrell, 18, of Washington, D.C., tried to run away but was quickly found and arrested, police said.

"One was apprehended very quickly, but the other took us some time to find," Llewellyn said.

The incident happened near Snowden River Parkway and Route 100 in Ellicott City. Snowden River Parkway was shut down for a time between Routes 108 to 100 for the investigation, police said.

Authorities said they were searching a drainage pond near a townhome community for a weapon, which police believe may have been dropped by Champion when he ran away.

"Law enforcement was doing their job. I'm very pleased, and I thanked them for their service," Ortman said. "They've been around the community all day, apparently looking for a lost weapon."

Champion and Kittrell are both expected to go through the booking process at the Howard County Detention Center on Friday, police said.
