Roanoke man sentenced to over a year after shooting two people at Food Lion

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A man has been sentenced to over one year in jail for shooting two people at Food Lion in Roanoke in 2023.

According to court records, on April 26, Kemonte A. Cooper was sentenced to more than seven years in jail, however, some of his charges were amended.

He was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon, discharge of a firearm, and unlawful wounding. Cooper was sentenced to one year and three months in jail.

As we previously reported, just after 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, shots were fired at the Food Lion on Peters Creek Road NW. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man and woman with injuries. Both victims were taken to the hospital for treatment.

As detectives continued working the case, they learned Cooper and the victims were involved in an altercation before the shooting. The case was presented to a Roanoke City Grand Jury in March, and Cooper was taken into custody.

Court records reflect Cooper will be on supervised probation after his release.
