Roanoke County PD start ‘Take it with you’ campaign following rise in car break-ins

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Police in Roanoke County and several law enforcement agencies across the region encourage residents to remove all personal items from their vehicles.

The Roanoke County Police Department says car thefts and fraudulent banking activity have significantly increased. In response, the department is emphasizing its “Take it With You” campaign to raise awareness.

Police said investigators have identified several known theft groups traveling the East Coast and committing these crimes. The group targets public parks, trailheads, gyms, schools during after-hours athletic events, and other areas where people commonly leave purses and wallets in their cars.

According to the police department, the thieves are reportedly smashing windows and breaking door locks to enter vehicles. Many steal purses, and wallets containing checks, ID cards, and credit cards.

The suspects are then using the stolen ID to cash checks at local banks and stealing thousands before leaving the area. Police say some thieves are making large purchases at local businesses.

During this time, the police department advises you not to leave any personal items in your vehicle, including inside your trunk. This is the best way to ensure you are not a victim of the current break-in spike.

The department is encouraging residents to be aware of out-of-state stage, rental vehicles, and suspicious people in parking areas. Residents can report suspicious activity by calling the non-emergency line at 540-562-3265.
