Roadwork may detour traffic along Edison, Metuchen border for six months

Motorists traveling the Edison and Metuchen border just off Route 1 may soon face a six-month detour.

The Middlesex County Engineer's Office has elected to replace the existing culvert on Orchard Street over a tributary to Mill Brook to meet current loading standards and better accommodate pedestrians, according to a resolution the Edison Township Council approved on Wednesday.

The county requires the Council's support to facilitate the closure of a portion of Orchard Street. The project is still in the design phase, according to a county official.

By temporarily closing a portion of Orchard Street and implementing a detour, replacing the existing culvert structure is expected to take less construction time, about six months.

In Metuchen, Orchard Avenue is a residential street off South Main Street and becomes Orchard Street in Edison near Winslow Road and continues out to southbound Route 1.

According to the resolution, access to Winslow Road, Townsley Street and the businesses along Orchard Street will continue during the temporary closure of a portion of Orchard Street, but vehicles traveling to destinations west of the Orchard Street closure will need to remain on southbound Route 1 to the ramp for Main Street in Metuchen and travel north to Orchard Avenue.

The temporary closure of Orchard Street will require motorists to follow Main Street south to access southbound Route 1 and northbound Interstate 287.
