Roadwork continues in Athens, detour in place

ATHENS, Pa. (WETM) — Some people traveling through Athens Borough this week will have to take a detour as the Route 199 roadwork project continues.

According to PennDOT, crews will be working on the northbound lane of Route 199 between Route 1064 (Pine Street) and Vanderbilt Street during the week of April 29. Work on this section of roadway will include new pavement, drainage improvements, utility relocations, sidewalk improvements, curb improvements, ADA-compliant curb ramp installations, traffic signal upgrades, driveway adjustments, and signing and pavement markings. Crews may be doing other miscellaneous construction as well.

Two-year roadwork project to begin in Liberty on Monday

Most southbound vehicles will be able to drive through the work zone, but tractor-trailers and northbound vehicles will need to follow the on-site detours. Northbound cars will have a 0.66-mile-long detour that uses East Pine Street, Wells Avenue, and East Frederick Street, and trucks will need to follow a 7.7-mile-long detour that uses Route 220 and Interstate 17 (Southern Tier Expressway).

Pedestrians will also be affected by additional construction this week. Crews will continue construction of the sidewalk and curb that runs along Route 199 (North Main Street) between Cherry Street and Satterlee Street. Additional work in this area may include construction of new concrete pads for pedestrian poles and mast arm foundations at the intersection of Route 199 (Keystone Avenue) and Lockhart Street.

PennDOT is reminding motorists to be alert and slow down while driving through the work zone. The four-year-long Route 199 reconstruction project is expected to be completed this fall.
