UPDATE: 70-year-old woman using motorized chair dies after being struck by car in Salem

A 70-year-old woman who was riding a motorized chair is dead after being struck by a car at the intersection of Liberty and River streets NE Wednesday morning, Salem Police said.

Police said emergency crews responded to the crash at 9:45 a.m.

A preliminary investigation by Salem Police Traffic Team showed Lois Marie Randall was trying to cross Liberty Street from east to west when she was hit by a car heading northbound on Liberty.

Police said witnesses reported Randall had entered the roadway close to oncoming traffic when the crash happened.

Randall was taken to Salem Health for her injuries and later died at the hospital.

Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

The area at northbound Liberty between River and South streets was closed for nearly three hours during the investigation. The crash is the 13th traffic fatality in Salem this year, police said.
