Road rage shooting suspect to go before grand jury

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — Speaking out for the first time in court Thursday, the victim of an alleged road rage shooting in Gloucester County said he felt violated and shocked. He added that it “felt like I was in a movie.”

He said this while sitting across from road rage shooting suspect Dylan Hicks, 27, as he made his first appearance in court.

Man arrested in connection with road rage incident involving a gun with 5-month-old in car

In court, the victim said he was driving home along George Washington Memorial Highway Jan. 27, according to deputies. The victim said he saw someone swerving through traffic behind him, and that driver later got behind him, with the person flashing his vehicle’s headlights. Not long after, the victim said he felt something hit his truck. He then saw the car speed up and do a U-turn right in front of his truck.

The victim’s mother told 10 On Her Side her son feared for his life. She is happy to see Hicks in court.

“I was very pleased,” Steph Berberich said. “I had restored my faith in the justice system because I really thought this guy was going to walk away. I feel like he is a time bomb waiting to go off.”

In court Thursday, the investigating officer told the court that he remembered Hicks telling him that he tried shooting at the other driver’s tire in self defense. He claims the victim was trying to run him off the road, and he felt the need to defend his five-month-old son, who was sitting in the backseat.

His defense attorney believes there’s no proof the gunshot came from Hicks.

“We don’t know whether the gunshot came from him or not,” said Conrad Bareford, Hicks’ attorney. “From what we heard today, we don’t know where the gunshot came from. The officer used deception to try to get a confession on my client, which, we’ll decide that up in Circuit Court.”

Hicks will go before a grand jury in May.
