A four-year-old boy is in a serious condition after he was shot in the head following an apparent road rage incident involving his mother.

Police in Cleveland said the youngster was hit while his mother was driving in the early hours in the Dead Man’s Curve area of the city.

Police said that after his mother honked her horn to pass another car, blocking the road, that car allegedly followed her onto the highway and fired shots into her car.

The youngster, who has not been identified by the authorities, was taken to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital where he was reportedly conscious and breathing.

"This investigation is ongoing. There have been no arrests," the police said in a statement.

Police said he underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments and it appears the fragments did not penetrate his brain, according to ABC News.

The Cleveland Police Department said it was searching for two men in a Pontiac believed to have been involved in the incident.
