Ridley Scott’s Quick Work Results In 3 Golden Globe Noms For ‘All The Money In The World’
It all started with an early November defiant decision by director Ridley Scott and Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin to drop Kevin Spacey from All the Money In The World and recast with Christopher Plummer in the small but crucial role of J Paul Getty. Between that moment and now, Scott did his reshoots, quickly edited the film, turned 80, and got prints ready just under the wire so that the majority of Hollywood Foreign Press Association members could see the film in New York and Los Angeles last Monday.
HFPA certainly responded: Scott got a nomination for Best Director, Plummer got one for Best Supporting Actor, and Michelle Williams got one for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama.
Considering where the film was when it withdrew from the closing night slot at AFI — theaters didn’t want to show it, the cast wouldn’t have promoted it and the entire investment and effort would have been for naught — the gutsy play by Scott and Friedkin has given the film all kinds of momentum in awards season, and as it heads for its Christmas Day opening through Sony/TriStar.
