Richmond Co. Deputy driving patrol vehicle charged with Vehicular Homicide in fatal Burke County crash

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – A Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputy driving a patrol vehicle has been charged with 2nd Degree Vehicular Homicide in a fatal 2023 Burke County crash.

37-year-old Augusta resident Ty Dailey was booked into Burke County Detention Center at 8:20 a.m. Friday morning after warrants were filed against him for 2nd degree Vehicular Homicide and Driving in Excess of the Posted Speed Limit.

According to Georgia State Patrol, Dailey was a Deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and was driving a RCSO patrol vehicle at the time of the crash.

The warrants for Dailey’s arrest state that Sunday, March 26th, 2023, at approximately 5:11 p.m., Dailey was driving “in a reckless manner” by travelling at 90 miles per hour in a 55 mile-per-hour speed zone when he collided with another vehicle near the intersection of GA 121/HWY 25 at Cohen Road just a mile North of the Waynesboro Supercenter on the road between there and Augusta.

The driver killed as a result of the accident has been identified as 75-year-old Jay Fager of Blythewood, South Carolina.

Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was able to verify the speed of Dailey’s vehicle by downloading the information about his speed before and during the collision from the patrol vehicle being driven.

Warrants were filed against Dailey more than a year later on April 28th, 2024.

Dailey’s employment with Richmond County Sheriff’s Office dates back to as early as 2013, when he was commended by Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree for making an off-duty arrest of several suspects wanted in several area armed robberies.

Dailey has been employed by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office since July 23rd, 2011. He is currently on administrative leave with pay.
