Rich Gingrich Donor Says He Doesn't Like Rich Donors

If Sheldon Adelson is to be believed, expect Newt Gingrich to stay an advertising feature in the race for a long time with up to $100 million in super PAC donations, even though Adelson himself says he doesn't like the influence of rich donors. In an interview in next month's Forbes (previewed here), Adelson, the casino mogul and No. 1 Newt booster, hinted that he's willing and able to give up to $100 million to Gingrich's super PAC while also telling Forbes' Steven Bertoni, "I’m against very wealthy people attempting to or influencing elections, but as long as it’s doable I’m going to do it."

"It’s unfair that I’ve been treated unfair—but it doesn’t stop me," Adelson says of his critics. "I might give $10 million or $100 million to Gingrich." Last week, Adelson ponied up $10 million to Gingrich's super PAC on top of the $11 million he's already given. It's no stretch to imagine Adelson is able to give the $100 million: He's worth roughly $25 billion. That means a nine-figure donation is only 0.4 percent of Adelson's wealth. Another contradictory thing Bertoni quotes Adelson saying: "I don’t believe in negative campaigning," which is surprising since Winning Our Future, that super PAC he's been funding, has made some awfully negative ads.
