Ribbon-cutting for Urban League Senior Living Center in Dellwood

DELLWOOD, Mo. – The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis cut the ribbon Tuesday on a new $10 million senior housing development in Dellwood, building hope and opportunity for the residents.

Located in the 9900 block of West Florissant Avenue, the new senior development features “44 modern apartment homes.”

Michael McMillan, the president and CEO of the Urban League, says the new 1- and 2-bedroom apartments represent a significant milestone in creating affordable senior housing. It’s also a pivotal moment in revitalizing a community, 10 years after the unrest in nearby Ferguson.

“As we come on the 10-year anniversary of the death of Mike Brown and everything that happened in Ferguson, the world will be watching to say, ‘What did St. Louis do in that decade? What did Ferguson do?’ And we really would not have an excuse to say, ‘Well, we did not have enough time.’ Be about the changes and the revitalization,” McMillan said.

Dellwood Mayor Reggie Jones says the development provides senior citizens with a safe place to live with different nearby activities.

“We have strong senior programs already in the City of Dellwood,” he said. “With the City of Dellwood and Urban League combined, these seniors will be up for a great experience.”

Seniors living in the Urban League apartments will also have free, reliable transportation to family events, medical appointments, and other daily errands. The GCRE Upward Mobility Funds will generously donate two Tesla electric vehicles to meet this need, as well as free charging for the cars.

“It’s very important to me that I found this place,” Remona Johnson said. “And it’s more than I anticipated. And it’s more than thought I was getting. I’m just so overwhelmed.”

“I have been here two weeks, and I love it, and it is getting better and better,” Mariah Harvey-Clark said.
