RI tax amnesty brings in $22M in overdue payments
Rhode Island brings in $22 million from delinquent taxpayers during 75-day amnesty program
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's tax amnesty program brought in nearly $22.4 million in payments from delinquent taxpayers, more than double what was collected the last time it was conducted.
The state's Division of Taxation got and approved 7,752 applications during the 75-day amnesty period. The state reported the final tally on Wednesday.
Under the program, penalties were waived for individuals who submit past-due returns with their taxes owed. Interest on the owed amount was reduced by 25 percent. The state also agreed not to pursue civil or criminal actions and to allow taxpayers to renew any licenses that had lapsed.
The last amnesty program in 2006 generated nearly $10 million. That year, there were 2,162 applicants.
