Rhode Island lawmakers to review Gov. Chafee's changes to $8.2B budget proposal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island state lawmakers are reviewing Gov. Lincoln Chafee's proposed changes to his $8.2 billion state budget.

The House Finance Committee is set to review the changes at a meeting Wednesday.

Every year the governor submits a budget proposal for the next fiscal year and often submits last-minute changes before lawmakers approve the spending plan.

This year, Chafee, an independent, wants to raise the eligibility for families participating in a child-care assistance program. He also wants the budget to include several new lease agreements for state agencies and the University of Rhode Island.

Lawmakers will approve a new state budget before adjourning for the year. The state's new fiscal year begins July 1.
