Rhode Island lawmakers to begin in-depth hearings on governor's $8.2 billion budget proposal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's budget-writing lawmakers are getting to work on Gov. Lincoln Chafee's $8.2 billion budget proposal for the next fiscal year.

The House Finance Committee has scheduled three days of budget hearings beginning Tuesday at the Statehouse.

Tuesday's discussions will focus on the aspects of the budget proposal dealing with the Division of Motor Vehicles and the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.

The budget hearings will continue through the legislative session.

Chafee's proposal would cut the corporate income tax and increase spending on public education.

Lawmakers typically make big changes to the budget proposal before passing it in the spring.
