The Democrat running for Rhode Island governor is sparring with his opponents in their final debate as he tries to recover from fallout over his comment earlier in the week that President Barack Obama can "really shove it" for not endorsing him.
Democrat Frank Caprio and his three opponents met Friday at Rhode Island College in a debate televised on WJAR-TV.
Caprio said independent Lincoln Chafee's plan to impose a 1 percent sales tax on currently exempt items would kill job growth. And after Republican John Robitaille (ROH'-bih-teye) accused him of mismanaging the state pension fund as general treasurer, Caprio told him he was acting "hyper" and lying.
Robitaille tartly replied that he was not the one who had told off the president.
Moderate Party candidate Ken Block is also in the race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEER'-ee).
