RI groups getting $2M in community service grants

Serve Rhode Island, local nonprofits getting $2 million in AmeriCorps community service grants

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's volunteer service center and eight local nonprofits are getting more than $2 million in federal AmeriCorps grants to support community service programs.

Serve Rhode Island, which administers the state's AmeriCorps program, will get $600,000. It will be used to award grants to other organizations or agencies providing services to young people and families in need and disadvantaged students.

Other groups getting funding include The Providence Plan, which will use $465,500 to support literacy and school-readiness programs and developmental health screenings. Save the Bay is getting nearly $213,000 for a 12-week environmental education program for third-graders.

The Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence is also getting about $213,000 to reduce chronic crime and violence.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced the funding Friday.
