RI group gets foreclosure prevention grant

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A Rhode Island nonprofit that advocates for affordable housing is getting a $150,000 grant through the state's share of the National Mortgage Settlement for foreclosure prevention efforts.

State Attorney General Peter Kilmartin announced the $150,000 grant to the Housing Action Coalition of Rhode Island on Wednesday.

The group will use the funds for outreach and education programs to support those at risk of foreclosure.

Five major banks agreed to a $25 million settlement with the federal government and state attorneys general over flawed mortgage practices.

Kilmartin earlier announced a two-year, $1.6 million grant to Rhode Island Legal Services for a foreclosure prevention project. The Housing Network of Rhode Island, Progreso Latino and HousingWorks RI have also received funding as part of the settlement.
