RI to get $800k to reduce recidivism
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is getting more than $800,000 in federal funds for programs designed to help former inmates avoid a return to prison.
The state's Congressional delegation announced the $808,000 grant Thursday.
The money will go toward programs designed to help former inmates adjust to life outside prison, along with training programs for probation and parole officers.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse says strong re-entry programs benefit former inmates while reducing crime and the costs associated with incarcerating repeat offenders.
Officials say many inmates leaving prison struggle with substance abuse, mental illness and limited employment opportunities.
According to state correctional records, 28 percent of the inmates released from prison in Rhode Island received new prison sentences within one year.
