RI to get $218,000 in federal arts grants
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Art programs in Rhode Island have been awarded $218,000 in federal funds to help local artists and expand educational opportunities for young people.
The funding from the National Endowment for the Arts was announced Tuesday by the state's Congressional delegation.
U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse says the money will enhance the quality of life in Rhode Island by supporting arts organizations and art education.
Grant recipients include the Alliance of Artistic Communities, the RiverzEdge Arts Project of Woonsocket and the Trinity Repertory Company of Providence. FirstWorks of Providence will receive $45,000 to fund local performances by jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, the Joffrey Ballet and the Kronos Quartet.
Other organizations will receive shares of the grant money for afterschool arts education and youth mentorship programs.
