Rhode Island’s new professional soccer team has lost its president just months into its first season.

Rhode Island FC President Brett Luy left his job with the league to take a separate, advisory position with Fortuitous Partners, the development company behind the flagship soccer stadium in Pawtucket, company chairman and club co-founder Brett Johnson announced Thursday.

Luy was hired in November 2022, helping build up the fledgling United Soccer League team’s roster and local presence, and guide it through the first 10 matches of its inaugural season this year.

“Brett played an important role as the club’s inaugural president,” Johnson said in a statement.

Mike Raia, a spokesperson for Fortuitous, declined to comment when asked about the seemingly abrupt nature of Luy’s departure, just 18 months into the job. Raia also could not offer specifics on Luy’s new role as a “special advisor” to Fortuitous, except to say he would no longer be involved in the team’s daily activities.

David Brady, a consultant for the ownership group’s board of directors, will temporarily step in to oversee day-to-day operations for the team, according to the statement.

Brady’s resume was not immediately available.

The club said it expects to name a new president in the “near future.” Raia could not comment on the search process or a more definitive timeline for a new hire.
