With a potential playoff berth likely out of sight for 2016, it is time for the annual discussion of the Buffalo Bills coaching staff. In short, I specifically looking for the Pegula family to follow through on their “Playoffs or bust” demand and to fire head coach Rex Ryan at the end of this season. In my mind, his time with the Bills should come to an end following this roller coaster of a season.

Despite being known as a player’s coach during both his time in New York and Buffalo, Rex Ryan is not the answer needed in western New York. Taking this time on a roller coaster ride during the past couple of seasons, the Buffalo Bills would be better suited to make a move for a more experienced option that can helm the team and make key decisions like the one revolving around quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

So far in his Bills career, Ryan is 14-14 — a better record than most coaches since the turn of the millennia — but has yet to deliver a playoff berth craved by both ownership and the fans. With the current change in coaching security across all sports, Ryan is now likely on his way out in Buffalo. Had this been maybe ten years ago, Ryan would likely still be safe.

That said, there have been a lot of coaching decisions that have cost the Bills in recent years. In his almost two seasons with Buffalo, Ryan has yet to upgrade the team’s receiving corps and lucked out at quarterback with the discovery of Tyrod Taylor last season. His most important addition to the team has been LeSean McCoy, a player the team depends on to win games.

This is simply not good enough. However, if his decisions for offensive personnel and coaching were questionable, his choices on defense and the play of unit at times is the final nail in the coffin. Despite coaching the defense with brother Rob Ryan this season, Rex has watched his defensive unit go from good, to okay, to bad, to worse in a matter of months.

Again, for a coach with a background in defense, this is unacceptable. While I would not make a move till the team is officially eliminated from the playoff chase, I do believe that Rex Ryan’s tenure in Buffalo has run it’s course. Expect to see some new faces coaching this Bills team next season.
