Rex Road closure on Memorial Day Weekend

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — Beginning Tuesday, May 28, the west side of Rex Road will be closed at the Meridian and Rex Roads intersection.

The closure allows crews to rebuild the west side of Rex Road and relocate utilities. A two-minute detour will be in place utilizing Ayers, Goodson, and Meridian Roads. Rex Road will open later this summer.

On Friday, May 24, southbound Meridian Road will be shifted to the east side of newly paved lanes to allow crews to work on the west side of Meridian Road. All traffic will be moved to the east side of Meridian Road for approximately 1.5 miles.

On the same day, Rex Road will shift to the south side of the road until Saturday, May 25. The shift will enable construction crews to begin phase two of the project, which involves working on the northeast corner of Rex and Meridian. Access to San Luis Peak Way from Rex Road will be temporarily closed.

All traffic will be detoured to Black Hills Drive to Mount Gateway Drive during the duration of the closure. The detour will be lifted once Rex Road and Meridian Road are fully open on Saturday.

Drivers are reminded to reduce speed and watch for workers, equipment, signs, and barricades.

The project will consist of installing a traffic signal, improving sight distance, widening Meridian Road to four lanes, and adding turn lanes on Rex Road with full-depth reconstruction of both Rex Road and Meridian Road, stormwater improvements, and utility relocations.

The project is expected to be completed by early 2025.
