April 10, 1924: Little house keeper shows presence of mind 

FOREST TWP. — Pearl Standen aged ten stays with her little brothers aged 2 and 4 years while Mrs. Standen the mother, drives the conveyance that carries the children from south forest to the Hyde school. One day last week during her mother’s absence Pearl discovered their home on fire, the fire having caught upstairs and burned through in one place near the chimney. Did Pearl run screaming to the neighbors? No not Pearl, she hurried her little brothers to the barn, carried water and extinguished the fire herself, and when the mother returned conditions were back to normal. We take off our hats to Pearl.

April 12, 1974: Rick and Marty both break free throw records 

Rick Swiderek and Marty Stempky broke Cheboygan Catholic High School basketball records in free throw shooting during the past season.

Swiderek broke the record for most consecutive free throws when he ran his string to 32. Stempky broke the record for most consecutive free throws in one game when he dropped in 19.

It was a big year for Rick Swiderek. He led the team in scoring with 367 points. He was tops in field goals with 140 and first in number of free throws made with 87. Swiderek had the highest free throw shooting percentage.

By canning 87 out of a hundred, he achieved an average of 87 per cent. With a statistics such as these, he was named to the All-Conference team and to the fifth All-State team picked by the Detroit Free Press, and given honorable mention on the All-State team chosen by the Associated Press.

Rick had a total of 877 points for his career, which puts him fifth on the All-Time Catholic High Scoring list.
