Revenge Porn King Hunter Moore Arrested for Hacking Email Accounts
Hunter Moore, arguably the Internet's most hated man, was arrested by the FBI and indicted by a California court on Thursday for charges related to his revenge porn website, IsAnyoneUp.
Moore and his alleged partner-in-crime, hacker Charles "Gary Jones" Evans, were charged with "conspiracy to 'access a protected computer without authorization to obtain information for private financial gain,'" in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, reports Time's Jessica Roy. FBI officials also confirmed Moore's arrest to Camille Dodero, who has covered Moore extensively in the past.
"On multiple occasions, Moore paid Evens to break into the email accounts of victims and steal nude photos to post on the website isanyoneup.com, according to the indictment," Moore writes. Evans was first exposed as Moore's hatchet man, albeit under the pseudonym "Gary Jones," in Dodero's infamous Village Voice investigation into Moore's shady activities.

Moore gained Internet notoriety for his website, IsAnyoneUp.com, that posted nude photos of guys and girls — often leaked by jealous/angry exes, allegedly — alongside their personal information taken from Facebook or Twitter. Because all of their revealing information was right there, people who ended up on the site quickly faced scorn and embarrassment in their daily life.

It also didn't help that Moore encouraged his rabid fanbase to embarrass people whose pictures showed up on his site. Attempts to get the photos removed often resulted in more scorn, and accusations of blackmail. This practice became known as "revenge porn," and Moore is credited as its modern innovator, or at least its biggest practitioner.
The FBI started investigating Moore after Charlotte Laws, a mother whose daughter appeared on Is Anyone Up, contacted the law enforcement agency. Laws began investigating Moore after her daughter said the photos that appeared on Is Anyone Up were never sent to anyone who could have forwarded them to Moore. Laws' daughter emailed the photos to herself from her phone. For them to appear on Is Anyone Up, someone must have hacked her email account. Once Moore started investigating other girls who appeared on the site, she noticed a pattern. Moore had files and files ready with stories similar to her daughters when the FBI finally decided to listen to her.

The FBI's Los Angeles Internet Crime division began investigating Moore, and eventually raided the home belonging to Moore's parents in Sacramento, California. (He's a real winner, folks.) Moore and his disciples harassed Laws and her family, and she recounted her harrowing experience on Jezebel last year.
