I returned to golf when the courses reopened amid COVID pandemic and now I’m hurt

Q. Since the pandemic started, I have been unable to go to the gym or play sports. When golf courses reopened, I returned to playing golf.

I began practicing a lot on the driving range and also played on the course at least three times per week.

Last week, I developed a sharp pain by my ribs on the left side. It is sore to the touch and bothers me when I laugh or cough.

I rested for a week and felt better but when I tried to play golf, the same pain came back.

Because my ability to work out and play sports is limited due to the pandemic, I really want to continue to play golf. I would welcome a diagnosis and treatment plan.

A. It appears you have an overuse injury that has resulted in symptoms in your front ribs.

This is known as costochondritis and is an inflammation of the rib cartilage and muscles. You went from not playing golf to a significant amount of activity.

This can also be made worse by trying to “kill the ball” and improper technique.

The initial treatment is rest, anti-inflammatory medication, and possibly some physical therapy. I recommend you see an orthopedic surgeon to confirm the diagnosis and try to get you back playing within a few weeks.
