Retired school employees set meeting schedule

Sep. 20—The Fayette County Association of Retired School Employees has announced its schedule of meetings for the 2023-24 school year.

The group's initial meeting is slated for Saturday, Sept. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fayetteville Quality Inn conference room. Spouses also are invited to attend the meetings, which feature a guest speaker. Special guests at the first meeting will be new retirees and their spouses.

Other meetings scheduled the the spring 2024 semester are Nov. 17, March 23 (back-up date if meeting is canceled because of weather will be April 27) and May 18, all at 10:30 a.m. at the Quality Inn.

The Fayette County unit's parent group, the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees, is the only organization of retired teachers, school personnel, administrators and college personnel in the state.

"This organization protects your pension, promotes senior opportunities and provides vital information that affects your life," Joel Davis, president of the Fayette County group, said in a press release. "All persons who receive a check from the State Retirement Board are eligible to become associate members."

Annual dues for both retired school employees and associate members are $20 ($15 for state dues and $5 for county dues). Dues payments may be mailed to David Perry, FARSE Treasurer, 97 Old Scarbro Road, Oak Hill, WV 25901.

Aside from the support members receive from the state organization, locally the FARSE annually presents a $500 scholarship to a Fayette County graduate who plans to go into the education field. Contributions to the scholarship fund may also be made to Perry.

Davis urges all recent retirees, as well as other retired school employees who have not joined the organization, to connect with the group.

"More members give WVARSE a strong voice with our legislators," he wrote.
