(WJBF) – Results are coming in for the House District 125 runoff election.

The long wait is coming to an end. These candidates made it through the special election. Now they’re in the runoff for the right to serve this area in Atlanta.

As voters headed to the polls, Tuesday, to cast their ballots for the House District 125 election. When we caught up with both candidates today, Gary Richardson and CJ Pearson both were hoping for a good turnout.

“I’ve been a public servant on the county commission for the last eight years and I think the people will see and reward me for previous service,” said Gary Richardson.

“The end goal is we want to serve the people of McDuffie and Columbia County,” said CJ Pearson. “We want to give them the best representative possible. That’s exactly what we intend to do. It’s been hard work but getting to connect with the voters of this district, learn their stories, learn their problems, concerns and come up with actual policies and solutions.”

And late Tuesday afternoon a new development: Columbia county announced there would be a hand count of the votes. The hand count comes after a problem uploading the ballots.

When we caught up with them, both candidates said they were optimistic about the results.

“Again, thank you for allowing me to serve you. I consider it an honor. I’ll do the best of my ability to serve this district and the state of Georgia,” said Richardson.

“I look forward to serving all in the 125th District, in both McDuffie and Columbia County and giving them a leader who is going to fight for them every single day. I’m not running for this office for personal gain, I’m running for the office to put the people of this district first,” said Pearson.

As of 10 p.m., Richardson leads with 65.97% of the vote to Pearson’s 34.03%

Remember, these candidates have to do this all over again in a few months. The winner will finish the unexpired term of former Representative Barry Fleming.  Then they’ll run again for a full term this November.
