Restrictions on use of US weapons to strike Russia remain in place — Secretary Austin

The Pentagon “expects” Ukraine to use U.S. weapons to strike targets only within its own territory, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on May 20.
Speaking after a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, Austin was responding to a question about whether Ukraine could use U.S.-supplied air defense systems to strike Russian warplanes attacking Kharkiv from above Russian territory.
"We expect them to continue using the provided weapons on targets in Ukraine," Austin said.
At the same time, he noted that in the case of Russian airstrikes on Kharkiv, "the air [dimension] dynamics are slightly different," but declined to "speculate" on the matter.

On May 17, it was reported that Ukraine asked the U.S. for assistance in identifying targets on Russian territory that it could strike with its own weapons, as well as to lift restrictions on the use of U.S. weaponry.
On May 3, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said that London does not object to the use of UK-supplied weapons for strikes on Russian sovereign territory.
