Restaurant of the Week: AppleWood Eatery & Espresso Bar

ESCANABA, Mich. (WJMN) – In the heart of downtown Escanaba on Ludington Street, you’ll find AppleWood Eatery & Espresso Bar. An establishment that’s been in the community for a decade.

“It’s unbelievable where that decade went,” said Macy Neumeier, Owner, AppleWood Eatery & Espresso. “It went by so quickly and I have so many stories. The people that I’ve met through time, the staff that I’ve had. My mom says I could write a book.”

Neumeier gives this restaurant a unique flair that you might not see often in the Upper Peninsula.

“Everything is made from scratch,” said Neumeier. “Fresh ingredients. We’re the most vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free friendly restaurant in town. I basically wanted to bring a piece of New York home. I wanted to bring the atmosphere of a big café to our small town. Fresh coffee, great fresh food and great music and atmosphere.”

It’s something Neumeier believes people wanted in the community.

“People I think were ready to embrace something new and were curious on what we had to offer,” said Neumeier. “I think because we were unique, that always kept us fresh. Fresh is like my standard. I want a fresh atmosphere, fresh food. Just keep on the trend.”

Speaking of fresh, there’s something for everyone to enjoy from a wide variety of sandwiches, to soups, salads and wraps to ending your meal with a sweet treat.

“I have my favorite sandwich, it’s the California Caprese,” said Neumeier. “It’s on a freshly baked baguette and it has basil pesto, fresh avocado, our house roasted chicken, and lettuce and tomato. Our house salad is top notch. It’s fresh mixed greens with shredded cheddar, bacon, cranberries, fresh apple and our maple cider vinaigrette and some toasted walnuts.”

For the customers it’s a place to satisfy your tastebuds and unwind.

“They always tell me it feels like home,” said Neumeier. “To me, that means the world. That is the reward. I really must say that I have the best costumers. It does feel like home. It feels like home for them and for me.”

AppleWood Eatery & Espresso Bar is open from 10:30 am – 2:00 pm, Monday – Friday and on Saturdays from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm where brunch is also served. For more information on this Restaurant of the Week, click here.
