There's team spirit and then there's unbridled eating in the name of patriotism. And that's exactly what restaurant chain Vapiano are flamboyantly encouraging, by giving each customer a free pizza or pasta dish for every gold medal Australia wins at the Rio Olympics.

What better way to celebrate the elite sportsmanship and athletic prowess of Down Under's greatest athletes than by chowing down on some delicious carbs.

The restaurant, which has stores in the states of New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, is running the promotion for the duration of the Olympics — promoting the harmonious marriage of cuisine and national pride. Or something like that.

Eating Italian food to celebrate an Aussie victory is an sterling example of multiculturalism, if ever there was one.

You may be saddened to learn that the free stuff is available each day that Australia wins gold on — not each time a gold medal is won. So if we win four medals in a day, you won't get four meals, greedies. You can register for a patriotic pizza over at the Vapiano website.
