Restaurant inspections: Scores for Mariscos El Big Boy, schools, more

The Food Establishment Inspection Report is a weekly report that appears Sundays. Information is taken from reports provided by the Environmental Health Department, and individual reports can be viewed at its website, http://amarillo.gov/departments/community-services/environmental-health/foodinspections. A numerical grading system is now being used, with a score of 100 points being equivalent to zero demerits.

  • 100 points – No major violation at the time of inspection

  • 85 points – Considered an average score

  • 70 points or below – Requires re-inspection within 24 hours

  • COS – Corrected on site during inspection

These points correspond to the following letter grades:

  • A – 90 to 100

  • B – 80 to 89

  • C – 70 to 79

  • F – 69 and below

(B/89) Aldacos Tacos, 3623 S.W. 6th Ave. Employee handled raw meat then touched refrigerator without changing gloves; sanitizer bucket not labeled; Food Manager must be present on site at all times. COS. Consumer advisory needed on menus for foods that may be consumed raw or undercooked. Correct by 05/17. Grease on containers. Correct by 09/05.

(A/92) Bowie Middle School, 2901 Tee Anchor Blvd. Employee dropped paper serving boat/trays on floor then put them back on serving line; vinegar stored in single-use cups in walk-in cooler. COS. Meat patties, chicken pizza and mashed potatoes in hot holding units at incorrect temperatures. Correct by 05/10.

(A/90) Buns Over Texas & Texas Tea, 6045 S.W. 34th Ave. Tomatoes and green chile sauce at improper temperatures; employee handled raw hamburger patty then touched buns and cheese with same gloves (repeat violation). COS. Packaged food submerged in ice (repeat violation); scoops improperly stored (repeat violation); bulk food containers without labels; grease trap invoice could not be provided. Correct by 11/01.

(A/99) Canyon High School, 1701 23rd St., Canyon. Ceiling tiles missing throughout back of kitchen area. Correct by 08/05.

(A/96) CISD-Culinary Arts, 1401 23rd St., Canyon. Caramel syrup stored on counter. COS. Missing ceiling tiles in mop room. Correct by 08/05.

(A/95) Eastridge Elementary, 1314 Evergreen St. Floor cleaner/degreaser stored in three-compartment sink and used as dish degreaser, not to be used on food contact surfaces; metal stem thermometer out of calibration. COS

(A/99) Glenwood Elementary, 2407 S. Houston St. Heavy layer of ice in bottom of freezer storing food. COS.

(A/98) Ichiban, 309 Wimberly Road. Dust accumulation on vent hood; heavy accumulation of debris and other items in area behind chest freezers. Correct by 09/05.

(A/94) Lawndale Elementary, 2215 S. Bivins St. Chicken ranch burritos at improper temperature in container on rack next to serving line; sanitizer at three-compartment sink and in sanitizer buckets test too weak; sanitizer not dispensing correctly from unit. COS.

(A/99) Legends Funnel Cakes, 1415 Sunrise Dr. Missing permit numbers on driver side of trailer; no permit in unit. COS.

(C/79) Mariscos El Big Boy, 2813 S.W. 6th Ave. Minced garlic sitting out at room temperature; employee washed hands in three-compartment sink; hand sink blocked; personal drinks on prep table; wet wiping cloths must be stored in sanitizer solution between uses. COS. No dates on past shellstock tags; shellstock tags not attached to container; no records for pH monitoring of ceviche; many food containers without date marks; many food containers without covers; Molluscan shellfish must not be removed from original container. Correct by 05/17. Gap at back door must be sealed; grease and dirt accumulation in many areas under equipment; heavy accumulation of debris on floors of walk-in cooler; lid needed on trash can in women’s restroom. Correct by 08/05.

(A/97) Mi Torreon, 3500 E. Amarillo Blvd. No paper towels (repeat violation). COS. Corner of walls and ceiling juncture need to be filled or covered (repeat violation). Correct by 08/22.

(A/97) Paramount Terrace Elementary, 3906 Cougar Dr. Gap under door leading to outside of building (repeat violation). Correct by 06/19. Dust on several pieces of equipment. Correct by 06/01. Dust on exhaust vents and on ceiling over prep table (repeat violation). Correct by 08/01.

(A/96) Pleasant Valley Elementary, 4413 River Road. Green sanitizer buckets not labeled. COS. Food handler certificates must be maintained on premises. Correct by 06/04.

(A/99) Pollos Y Hot Dogs, 1215 S. Grand St. Tape on broken door handle of drink cooler. Correct by 10/04. Chipped paint/rust on racks in both coolers. Correct by 11/04.

(A/93) Potato Factory, 4631 S. Western St. Food Manager Certificate expired; food handler certificates needed; grease traps need to be serviced; Certified Food Manager certificate must be posted in view of public; food handler certificates must be maintained on premises Correct by 05/20. Several employees without proper hair restraints while preparing food (repeat violation); heavy accumulation of syrup and bio-film inside tea dispensing machine. Correct by 06/05.

(A/93) Sams Southern Eatery, 4317 Teckla Blvd. Employee did not wash hands in between switching tasks; utensils without handles used as scoops in containers of seasoning and sugar; inside ice machine dirty; accumulation on soda machine dispensers. COS. Several wet wiping cloths stored on the prep tables; dust, flour and other food debris in several areas of establishment. Correct by 08/05. Gap along bottom of back door must be sealed. Correct by 09/05.

(B/89) Sunrise Elementary, 5123 S.E. 14th Ave. Raw beef stored over milk in three-door reach-in refrigerator; floor cleaner/degreaser used as dish degreaser stored in three-compartment sink; three-door refrigerator not holding at proper temperature; metal internal thermometer inaccurate in six-door refrigerator. COS. Food handler certificates must be up dated. Correct by 08/04.

(A/94) Wal-Mart #5216, 5730 W. Amarillo Blvd. Five badly dented cans; four packages of food broken open. COS. Ice build-up in multiple walk-in freezers; broken gaskets around outside of pizza and ice cream freezers; dust on ceilings and fans; spider webs on ceiling of storage area; old food debris or dust build up inside or on top of grating of multiple reach-in coolers. Correct by 09/05.

(A/97) Wal-Mart Deli #5216, 5730 W. Amarillo Blvd. Ice build-up on walk-in freezer; mop sink attachment leaking, causing a spill on floor and mold growth on holder; heavily soiled tongs for hot holding unit in deli (repeat violation); dust on ceilings and fans. Correct by 09/05.

(A/96) Wal-Mart Meat & Seafood #5216, 5730 W. Amarillo Blvd. Sanitizer at three-compartment sink in meat market area too weak (repeat violation). Correct by 05/16. Chipped paint/rust on racks in both coolers; dust on ceilings and fans. Correct by 09/05.

(A/92) Zinos, 1009 S. Grand St., Ste. 200. Pre-packaged food items not properly labeled. COS. No hot water at hand sink in restroom. Correct by 05/17. Hot water at three-compartment sink at improper temperature. Correct by 05/20. Cup boxes and pickle bucket stored on floor. Correct by 08/05.
