Residents show appreciation for National Police Week

May 18—As communities across the nation observe National Police Week, members of our own community took time to honor and appreciate the dedicated service of local law enforcement officers.

Local law enforcement includes the Richmond Police Department, Berea Police Department, Kentucky State Police, the Madison County Sheriff's Office, and the Eastern Kentucky Police Department.

The Richmond Police Department expressed gratitude for their fellow law enforcement personnel, stating, "These partners work beside us, cover for us, and keep our families safe while we're on shift. You have our gratitude every day!"

Thanks to local businesses like Yeti Freeze, Walmart, Jones Heating and Cooling, Texas Roadhouse, and Domino's, officers across the county were treated to sweets and other treats.

Individuals in the community also stated their appreciation for local police departments going above and beyond for safety and positive community engagement.

"They were amazing at Richmond Pride. They continually engaged with the community, and everyone felt safe with them around, especially with how they were engaging," said Chadwick Horn.

Martina Jackson echoed this sentiment, noting an increase in positive interactions with diverse groups within the Richmond community.

"I have seen an increase in positive community engagement with diverse groups in the Richmond community. I think that is so important and encouraging to see. Community connections are essential for public safety," Jackson remarked.

Jessica Richards noted her appreciation for the Berea Police Department's handling of her family's special needs.

"Berea officers have autism training, which is super important to me with both kids having autism," she said. "They have been to our apartments several times in the last couple of months and have been respectful and understanding."

As National Police Week comes to an end, the Richmond Police Department acknowledged the ultimate sacrifices made by some of their own.

"We also acknowledge that not every officer makes it home. For those who lost their lives in the line of duty, you have our deepest gratitude. We will always remember your sacrifice," the department expressed solemnly in a statement.

The observance of National Police Week not only honors fallen heroes but also strengthens the bonds between law enforcement and the communities they serve. The warm interactions and gratitude shown by local businesses and residents reflect a community that deeply values the dedication and bravery of its officers.

This week, which includes National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
