Residents return home after New Jersey fire
Residents forced to evacuate because of a forest fire in New Jersey are back in their homes.
State Forest Fire Service spokesman Greg McLaughlin says residents of 620 homes in Berkeley Township, a central coastal area about 45 miles south of New York City, returned to their houses late Thursday. He says the fire there has been contained.
Another blaze in Berkeley still is being battled. The two fires were among more than a half-dozen in New Jersey, fueled by high winds and dry conditions. No injuries were reported.
A fire in Toms River caused school officials to close a school early as a precaution. The intermediate school later was used as a command post for fire department officials. A boat trailer, a house and two sheds burned.
