Residents react after shootings in Luzerne County

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two shootings in less than 24 hours are under investigation in Luzerne County.

“It was about two in the afternoon, at, I was in the backyard, and I heard about four to five gunshots go off,” Hanover Township resident Brian Angeli.

There were two shootings within a few block areas near the Hanover Township Wilkes-Barre border on Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday.

“There were some workers down there that went running, they’re working and running some fiber optic lines and apparently, they’re were like right across from where it happened, and they took off for sure,” Angeli added.

Police responded to the first shooting near the intersection of South Franklin Street and Ingham Street just after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

No one was hurt and no property was hit.

The second shooting happened about twelve hours later at 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday just four blocks away.

When officers arrived on the scene, they spoke with two people who were not hurt but claimed someone fired a gun at them.

Police say they could not provide a description of the suspect.

“Do you feel safe in this neighborhood?” 28/22 News Reporter Jason LiVecchi asked.

“Relatively yeah, I mean, you know, the valley is definitely going down downhill for sure,” Angeli replied.

The Wilkes-Barre Police Department released two incident reports on these two shootings, however at the station on Wednesday afternoon they shared no more information about these shootings, and residents in the area, say this isn’t the first time they’ve heard gunshots in their neighborhood.

“One time there was a shooting in front my house right there in front of my house when I went to look out the window, nobody. Then 10 minutes. 10 minutes after we see full of cops, I don’t trust this area here,” said Wilkes Barre resident Victor Santana.

“You see this problem everywhere; Wilkes barre is not an outlier in any stretch of the imagination,” Ryan Cooper of Hanover Township said.

28/22 News did reach out to police for comment on the investigations.
