Republicans turn on each other in California US House fight

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Republicans are defending a string of endangered U.S. House seats in California, but one of the toughest fights involves two of their own.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is being challenged in Southern California's 48th District by a one-time protégé, lawyer Scott Baugh.

Baugh headed the Orange County GOP for a decade and says it's time for change. He says the 70-year-old congressman has ignored the district while emerging as Russia's leading defender on Capitol Hill.

Rohrabacher, seeking a 16th term, calls his rival an unethical lobbyist with questionable conservative values.

A worst-case scenario for the Republicans would see no one from the party finish in the top two of the June 5 primary. That would give Democrats a seat that could help tip control of the House in their favor.
