Republican Dennis Justice of Fletcher is running for N.C. House 117 after initially filing to run for the state senate.

Tim Moffitt is the current representative for the House District 117. Justice previously ran for the seat in 2016 and more recently lost the Republican primary in 2020 for the District 117 seat. Moffitt is now running for the District 48 state senate seat currently held by Chuck Edwards, who is stepping down to run for Congress.

Chelsea Walsh of Hendersonville is also running for the Republican nomination for House District 117. Michael Greer O’Shea recently filed in the race as a Democrat.

“My entry suddenly makes this race the most important North Carolina House race in the state because of who is on the ballot and what is actually on the line. Therefore, the voters of District 117 are suddenly the most important voters in the state,” Justice said in a news release.

Justice speaks regularly about gambling issues at Henderson County Board of Commissioners meetings and says that is one of the key points to his campaign.

“I am simply the most talented conservative voice on gambling, recreation, Internet and other issues in the entire state. That’s not boasting, that is the truth,” Justice said. “For 30 years, I have been on the front line fighting for the taxpayers for what was right, sometimes fighting alone. But I have always looked at solutions, not what is politically popular. I represent the working class as I am one of us."

Justice says he has a Master’s degree in sports management and that his civic experience “will be invaluable in the ongoing discussion on the potential legalization of sports betting and other forms of gambling in North Carolina.”

Justice said he will also propose a rural fiber initiative for the 2024 campaign; propose programs to fight adult obesity rates, push for a constitutional amendment “removing any limit on saving money by any local governing body," increase the state’s online library and at-home options for education, improve emergency management infrastructure and lighting on roads, save money to build more mental health hospitals and group homesand a grant program for new business start-ups.
