Reports: Snowstorm snarls travel, cuts power to thousands in southern US

Snow, sleet, rain and severe thunderstorms continue to impact the southeastern United States.

This rare early-December storm has already brought significant snowfall to some areas, including Louisiana, Alabama and Texas.

Residents woke up to cities blanketed in snow on Friday morning in Alexandria, Louisiana; Jackson, Mississippi; and Birmingham, Alabama.

Snow will continue to accumulate across parts of central Alabama, northern Georgia, western North Carolina and Virginia through Saturday morning.


3:57 a.m. EST Saturday: Snow is falling as far south as Pensacola, Florida, according to local TV reporter Hannah Mackenzie:



2:45 a.m. EST Saturday: After a brief break in the snow on Friday evening, snow has returned to the Atlanta metro area. Power outages have also increased across Georgia to over 93,000 customers, according to Georgia Power.

1:15 a.m. EST Saturday: The Mobile Airport in Alabama has officially picked up 1 inch of snow. This broke the previous daily record of a trace of snow set in 1942. Snow will wind down in southern Alabama by dawn.

As cold air continues to dive southward, rain has changed over to snow in the far western portion of the Florida Panhandle. Rain is falling in Pensacola, but there may be some snow and sleet mixing in later Saturday morning.


11:30 p.m. EST Friday: Snow continues to fall along part of the Gulf Coast as power outages mount in the Southern states.

Approximately 40,000 customers are without power in Alabama, according to WSFA. Over 85,000 Georgia Power customers are in the dark.

Those without electricity may struggle to stay warm overnight as temperatures plummet below freezing.


10:19 p.m. EST Friday: Over 300 flights on Saturday have already been canceled for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to Flightstats.

Flight delays and cancellations will likely mount this weekend for airports across the Northeast as the winter storm swipes the coast, delivering snow to the major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor.


9:49 p.m. EST Friday: Mobile, Alabama, just recorded their earliest measurable snowfall since records began in 1842. More snow is likely in the city early tonight as a band of snow moved through the area.


9:19 p.m. EST Friday: An emergency manager has measured 8 inches of snow in Ashland, Alabama. Downed trees are blocking numerous trees across the region.


8:25 p.m. EST Friday: Asheville, North Carolina, has seen some of the most snow so far from the winter storm. Snow totals have ranged from 6 to 12 inches in areas surrounding the city. Some spots may end up with over a foot of snow by the time the storm ends.

Over 32,000 electric customers are without power across North Carolina and South Carolina, according to Duke Energy.


6:50 p.m. EST Friday: Nearly 1 foot of snow has fallen in parts of the southeastern United States from the late-week winter storm. The highest totals have been reported in western North Carolina.

5:22 p.m. EST Friday: Over 800 flights have been canceled and another 930 have been delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to FlightStats.

The airport has been experiencing a mix of snow, sleet and rain since early in the morning, contributing to many of the delays and cancellations.

Snow is also leading to travel delays during the Friday evening commute, including in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Multiple cars have slid off the highway around Charlotte as the city experiences a mix of rain, sleet and snow.


4:41 p.m. EST Friday: Snow is advancing northward with light snow being reported around Cape May and Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Heavier snow is falling farther south with many grassy and elevated surfaces being blanketed with snow in Richmond, Virginia. The snow has yet to accumulate on many roads, but this could change in the next few hours, leading to slick travel.


3:47 p.m. EST Friday: As much as 6 inches of snow has been reported across southern Mississippi, as of Friday afternoon. The weight of the snow has caused some trees to fall across the region, leading to power outages.

Over 66,000 electric customers are without power across southern Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. An additional 40,600 are without power across Alabama, according to Alabama Power.


3:19 p.m. EST Friday: Debris from Hurricane Harvey has been blanketed with snow in Rockport, Texas. This is near the location where Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on Aug. 25, 2017.


2:09 p.m. EST Friday: Flight delays are in effect at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as rain and snow continues to impact southern Georgia.


12:38 p.m. CST Friday: Snowfall continues to set records in Texas. NWS Brownsville has reported the first measurable snow accumulation since Christmas of 2004.


1:26 p.m. EST Friday: CBS46 in Atlanta has reported a seven-vehicle crash causing traffic backups and major delays.


11:36 a.m. CST Friday: Over 100,000 customers are without power across the southern U.S. as rain, sleet and snow continues to fall, utilities report.

Public officials continue to ask residents to drive slowly or avoid unnecessary travel during the wintry weather.

Some of the highest snow totals so far today have come in from Jackson, Mississippi, over 5 inches, and Corpus Christi, where 7 inches was reported.

In Rockport, Texas, one of the hardest-hit areas from Hurricane Harvey in late August, remaining storm debris is covered in snow.


10:43 a.m. CST Friday: Enough snow and sleet is currently falling over parts of Louisiana for residents to make snowmen.
