Report: Windows Phone 7 Marketplace Has More Than 25,000 Apps

Microsoft launched the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace in October with 1,000 apps. Just about nine months later, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has grown to boast more than 25,000 apps as of Friday.

According to data on WindowsPhoneAppList.com first reported by WinRumors, Microsoft's mobile application store offers a total of 25,079 apps, a majority of which (51 percent) are free. WP7AppList breaks it down to reveal that games is the single largest app category, comprising 18 percent of the WP7 Marketplace, followed by books and reference (12 percent), and entertainment (11 percent). English is the language of 75 percent of these apps, with German and Spanish tied for the second-most represented WP7 app language, accounting for eight percent of apps. The average price for paid apps is $1.48.

The WP7 Marketplace has grown at a rather impressive rate. Microsoft confirmed that it reached the 10,000 app milestone back in March, and WinRumors notes that 3,000 apps were added to the store in April alone. At the end of April, the WP7 Marketplace had more than 15,000 apps in its ranks.

On average, 186 are added to the store every day, WP7applist says. WinRumors points out that in the last 24 hours alone, 262 apps were added and another 131 were updated.

While the WP7 Marketplace's speedy growth is quite a feat, it has some catching up to do if it wants to catch up with other platform's app stores. Google's Android Market has more than 200,000 apps and Apple's App Store has a total of about 500,000 approved iOS apps.

Microsoft hasn't yet confirmed the latest numbers.
