Report: Texans, Californians top out-of-staters moving to Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — More new residents to the Natural State moved to Arkansas from Texas and California in 2023, according to data from the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.

44,271 license transfers were issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles last year, giving Arkansans a look at the inbound migration into the state.

Scott Hardin with the DFA said California and Texas residents moving to Arkansas represented around 28% of license transfers in 2023.

42% (or 18,870) of license transfers came from bordering states.

These were the top ten states for inbound license transfers in 2023:

  1. Texas: 7,993

  2. California: 4,293

  3. Missouri: 3,329

  4. Oklahoma: 2,652

  5. Florida: 2,609

  6. Tennessee: 1,852

  7. Louisiana: 1,830

  8. Illinois: 1,483

  9. Colorado: 1,361

  10. Arizona: 1,276

“This list further confirms people from across the United States are choosing to make Arkansas home,” Hardin said. “The state’s momentum in attracting new residents results in a broader tax base, providing additional resources to cities and counties throughout Arkansas.”

In addition to residents moving to Arkansas from other states, over 200 came from outside the United States. Puerto Rico (134), France (109), Germany (38) and South Korea (37) topped the list of those coming from outside the country.
