Terry Collins resigns as Mets manager
In a move that will surprise no one, Terry Collins will not return as the manager of the New York Mets. The way he’s leaving, however, is slightly different than most expected.

Collins announced his resignation as the club’s manager following Sunday’s game. He will remain with the team in a front office role, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The move probably shouldn’t come as a shock. The writing had been on the wall for Collins for some time now. That line of thinking was strengthened after a report came out late in the year suggesting dysfunction in the Mets organization.
Collins managed the Mets to the 2015 World Series, and guided the team to a wild card berth in 2016, but injuries were too much to overcome in 2017. Collins again lost most of his pitching staff to various ailments, while Yoenis Cespedes was limited to just 81 games.
To make matters worse, the Mets continued to botch those injuries. Stud pitcher Noah Syndergaard infamously declined an MRI and then wound up with a serious issue. Players routinely returned much later than initially expected.
As Marc Carig’s Newsday report suggested, Collins was often left in the dark on some injury details, causing him to give unclear or inaccurate information to the media.
That makes it tough to know how much of that to put on Collins. Some situations, like the bizarre handling of Matt Harvey, reflected poorly on Collins, but perhaps others in the org forced his hand.
Even if that was the case, Collins was often maligned for his tactical decisions. Not just with Harvey, but with overworking his relievers as well. Many felt his time with the Mets was coming to a close.
Despite reports of disfunction, Collins looked back well on his time with the Mets while stepping down.

Collins added that he knew he would leave the team during the summer, and spoke with general manager Sandy Alderson about his decision later in the year.
In his seven seasons with the Mets, Collins produced a 551-583 record. Given that he’s joining the club’s front office, Collins is unlikely to return to managing next season.
