Report: Ship at risk of sinking off Istanbul

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency says a cargo ship is at risk of sinking after brushing against two anchored ships while trying to moor in strong winds off the coast of Istanbul.

Dogan news agency footage shows the Sierra Leone-flagged Kayan-1, carrying containers, tilting on its right side Friday as crew members pumped out water that apparently seeped in through a crack.

Maritime authorities dispatched coast guard boats to help the 86-meter (282-feet) freighter as a tugboat waited nearby to tow it.

Authorities have canceled several scheduled ferry trips in the Sea of Marmara and in the Bosporus, the narrow waterway that bisects Istanbul, due to strong winds and high seas.
