Report: Nokia working on tablet computer

HELSINKI (AP) — Nokia Corp.'s head of design says the company is working to develop a tablet computer to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPad, but declines to give a timeframe for its launch.

Marko Ahtisaari said in an interview published Thursday in Kauppalehti Optio, a business magazine, that he spends roughly one third of his work time to develop what is expected to be Nokia's first tablet device using the Windows 8 operating system.

Though CEO Stephen Elop had earlier said the Finnish company wants to enter the tablet market at some point, Ahtisaari is the first executive to acknowledge a device is already under works.

Digitimes.com this week claimed the new tablet would be launched in the fourth quarter this year.

Spokespeople for Nokia declined to confirm the information in the interview.
