GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Multiple outlets have reported that Michigan star safety Rod Moore has suffered a serious knee injury and could miss time in the upcoming season.

Matt Zenitz, a national college football reporter with 247 Sports, was the first to report late Monday night that Moore suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during practice on Sunday. Rivals’ Maize & Blue Review confirmed the report.

If true, it could be a big blow for first-year head coach Sherrone Moore. Rod Moore is considered a critical piece of the Wolverines’ staunch defense and was expected to help “quarterback” the secondary with Mike Sainristil off to the NFL.

Moore emerged as a starter during his freshman year and has held down the job ever since. He surprised fans by announcing he would return for his senior season instead of declaring for the NFL Draft.

Moore was named to the All-Big Ten third team by coaches last year and as an honorable mention in 2022 by media members. He’s also known for making big plays, including the game-sealing interception to beat Ohio State 30-24 last year in Ann Arbor.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, recovery from a torn ACL typically takes between six to nine months, but athletes have proven there can be exceptions.

In 2019, Clemson wide receiver Amari Rodgers suffered a torn ACL in spring practice and returned in time for the Tigers’ second game of the season 24 weeks later. In 2013, Michigan linebacker Jake Ryan suffered a torn ACL in spring camp and returned to game action on Oct. 12 against Penn State.

Moore’s absence will open a job in the Wolverines’ secondary. Fifth-year senior Makari Paige is expected to hold onto his spot. Sixth-year senior Quinten Johnson is also a safe bet to get more playing time, along with junior Zeke Berry and sophomore Brandyn Hillman, both highly regarded recruits out of high school.
