Report: Louisiana has the least healthy school lunches in US

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A new report puts Louisiana in last place nationwide for healthy school lunches.

The State of School Lunch Report by ProCare Therapy ranked how states compare in giving healthy school lunches to students.

“Access to nutritious and appealing school lunches is crucial for the health and academic success of our nation’s children,” said Senior Vice President of ProCare Therapy Stephanie Morris. “This report serves to recognize the states that are leading the charge in offering high-quality, healthy meals to their students, and to encourage other states to follow suit.”

Louisiana DCFS: Summer EBT will be available for children

States identified as having the healthiest lunches were Massachusetts, Maine and Hawaii.

Louisiana ranked No. 50 in the report. Other states ranking the lowest for healthy school lunches were Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico and Alaska.

The report said these states had a lower rate of:

  • School program participation.

  • National School Lunch Program meals served.

  • Fruit and vegetable consumption.

Data showed that the most popular school lunch in Louisiana was fried chicken.
