The New York Islanders are poised to rid themselves of goalie Rick DiPietro, as the Islanders will place him on $100 waivers Tuesday for the purpose of using a compliance buyout on him, Newsday reported.
DiPietro, 31, signed a 15-year, $67.5 million deal with the team seven years ago, and the deal has been criticized a lot since then.,
The decision to buy out DiPietro will cost the Islanders $1.5 million per year for the next 16 years, because he still has eight years and $24 million remaining on his deal.
DiPietro was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 NHL Draft.
He has played in more than eight games in a season only once the past five years. This past season he played in three games, had an 0-3 record and had a goals-against average of 4.09.
